How the Railway Came to Leytonstone  Alan Simpson  Price: £ 4.00 including UK postage and packing; ISBN: 0-9553729-0-9  Our Society's first publication, How the Railway Came to Leytonstone, was written and researched by member Alan Simpson to a high standard. It is in magazine size format. The full colour cover incorporates a tinted postcard of the station about 1905 as businessmen stream in. It includes a version of the classic Underground map designed by Harry Beck (who was born in Leyton) showing the extension in 1947 of the Central Line over the former Great Eastern tracks through Leyton and Leytonstone to Epping. The cover also has a map of 1935 showing the railway lines and open spaces of our area. Inside are 3 detailed historic maps of the area, the first timetable for the railway line and 8 historic photographs.Alan's text explains how the Eastern Counties Railway reached Leytonstone in 1856, setting the railway in the context of earlier communications in the area, giving an idea of what the local settlements were like, and explaining how the route through Leytonstone came to be chosen. It also touches on the subsequent residential development of Leytonstone before the arrival of the Tottenham & Forest Gate Railway line in 1894. A final section brings the story briefly up to date, so that the modern-day traveller on the Central Line may understand something of the story behind his or her daily commute.

The Early Years of the Leyton Schools' Football Association  Colm Kerrigan  Price: £3.00  plus 75p UK postage and packing; ISBN: 0-9553729-1-7  Colm Kerrigan is the author of our Society's second publication, The Early Years of the Leyton Schools' Football Association. Over a hundred years later it continues as the Waltham Forest Schools' Football and Cricket Association, for whom David Beckham played in 1989-90. Colm's short history places the Association in context, the swift establishment of a network of schools in what was effectively a large new town. The booklet has 6 photos, 5 of them taken by Alfred Wire, the headmaster of Harrow Green boys' school, who was a pioneer in photography—and an enthusiast for the history of Leyton and Leytonstone.
