Leyton and Leytonstone local history reading list
The history of Leyton and Leytonstone does not have as many books as other places like Walthamstow. I know of these, which you may find in the Library:
- Waltham Forest Oral History Workshop has written some good background to its projects, particularly "The Road to Jeremy's Ferry". Some of the Oral History Workshop's publications are only available on its website.
- The London Borough of Waltham Forest by Nigel Sadler in the Britain in Old Photographs series published by jointly by Waltham Forest Council and Sutton Publishing Limited
- Leyton and Leytonstone by Keith Romig and Peter Lawrence in the Archive Photographs Series published by The Chalford Publishing Company Limited
- A Pictorial Review of Old Leytonstone by Peter Lawrence
- Waltham Forest 1910-1940, and Waltham Forest since 1940, both published by Walthamstow Historical Society
- The History of Leyton, An extract from the Victoria County History of Essex, published by Waltham Forest Council (includes Leytonstone) the text is available on the website
- Walthamstow and Leyton Tramways by Robert J Harley in the Tramway Classics Series published by the Middleton Press (not so much about buildings, of course).
The Council has also produced some free leaflets which you should find at libraries and information centres :
- Millennium Heritage Trail No. 2, Leytonstone
- Forest School Conservation Area
- Browning Road Conservation Area
- Leytonstone Conservation Area
- Listed Buildings in Waltham Forest
- Victorian Housing in Waltham Forest
Looking slightly beyond Leytonstone are these other free leaflets:
- Millennium Heritage Trail No. 4, Lea Valley
- Woodford Green Conservation Area
- Essex County Cricket Club Pavilion, Leyton.
You might also like to visit the Vestry House Museum, Vestry Road, Walthamstow Village. The Museum covers the whole Borough and is another place to look for the leaflets.
